New forms of social integration, and their relationship to new forms of inequality

Recurrent crises of contemporary societies led to new forms of inequalities accompanied by growing importance of disparities, a renewed urban-rural divide, sharpening political polarization and exclusive social identities. Under these circumstances, traditional approaches to social stratification provide a less and less satisfactory explanation for how new forms of inequity develop, and how they reorganize our societies on the local and global level. Furthermore, this transformation means not only the emergence of new forms of difference, but social forms and mechanisms of social integration are also changing. Understanding the realignment of social inequalities requires a novel and complex approach to social integration.

Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics (IEEJSP) invites original research papers for its thematic issue on “Gender (Studies) in Exile”. Guest Editors: Judit Takács (KWI Essen; Centre for Social Sciences); Achim Rohde (Academy in Exile, Freie Universität Berlin)

This thematic issue aims to bring together scholars with an interest in conducting gender studies research in challenging, or in some cases hostile, circumstances, especially in countries where gender studies as an academic discipline is being delegitimized by state authorities. We welcome papers that explore theoretically and/or empirically the strategies, narratives, and underlying motivations that fuel such campaigns against gender studies as well as their academic and social impact. We are equally interested in contributions that focus on responses and counter strategies developed by gender studies scholars and scholars in exile in general. We encourage the application of a broad understanding of exile, including external exile and various forms of inner exile such as a condition of voicelessness, and non-territorial exile at home.

The social integration and school inclusion of disadvantaged ethnic minorities and of pupils with foreign, migrant and refugee backgrounds are key problems to educational policy. Existing research highlights that even successful integration programs could only enhance social integration at the interpersonal level to a limited extent and resulted in few inter-ethnic friendship relations. At the same time, social and educational inequalities and prejudices towards ethnic minorities persisted within schools.

Call for Papers: Beyond recognition: crises of political representation

Though the recognition paradigm in social sciences has increasingly been coming under scrutiny in the past few years, the social dynamic of recognition struggles has not been in the focus of research. Typically, the question asked is how silenced parts of society, groups of individuals subjected to past or present oppression, are given voice by various sorts of activism. What we often see, in fact, is that the actual politics of recognition results in a competition of mutually exclusive, self-totalizing moral universes that seek to degrade each other, akin to a zero-sum game. In memory politics, a “victimhood competition” for equal recognition often unfolds, with each side aiming to get its own social suffering publicly recognized by the other. The position of victimhood here seems to function as the condition of entering into the field of recognition claims. With this in mind there is a pressing need to comprehend the various forms of victimization in political identity when claiming recognition.

Call for Papers: The Chinese and Europe – Perceptions, influence and interactions

There has been much anxiety and speculation about the impact of "China's rise" on Europe. Much has been written about the potential effects of Chinese companies investing in cash-strapped industries on Europe's jobs, intellectual property, and cybersecurity. Much less has been published on the expansion of Confucius Institutes, Chinese state media and other Chinese cultural outfits as forms of "soft power". More studies have focused on how to attract even more Chinese students and tourists, while only some on the political fallout of China's Belt and Road project and its way of dealing with Central and Eastern Europe as a potential divide-and-rule strategy towards the EU. Too little has been written on the impact of Chinese capital in the European film and cultural industries or the changing European public perception on China.

Call for Papers: Enforcing Equality? Promises and Limits of Legal Responses to Systemic Inequalities

Inequalities are rising, with social divisions being increasingly presented as cultural, ethnic, religious, or racial, as resulting from unchangeable traces and/or deep historical roots, revolving around essentialist visions of groups of people. This undermines the moral equality of, and solidarity between, individuals that are central to constitutional democracy, and arguably to the very concept of law. The impact on law could not be more pronounced. While legal solutions to combat inequalities had proved in many cases to be insufficient (that many claim is the result of the individualist approach that cannot capture systemic violations resulting from exploitation), even these limited responses have now come under attack in many contexts, including gender and sexual orientation. Documenting and understanding this process can become a part of overcoming this challenge and can lead to new insights and innovative solutions that enable law to address systemic inequalities.

Increasing numbers of studies provide data-rich descriptions of Roma migration in Europe, although most of these fail to look at the subject from a theoretical and interdisciplinary perspective. Taking into account the agency of Roma migrants, their perceptions and aspirations, this call invites researchers to submit theoretical contributions to the field from different disciplines. We are especially interested in papers that link a micro-level understanding of migration-related decisions and trajectories to macro-level trends in social transformation through an analysis of the social dynamics of the migration process.

It is widely acknowledged that two decades of “Europeanization”—conceived as both the physical expansion of the European Union and the diffusion of European norms and practices—have had a profound influence on ethnic relations. Although the pacifying impact of European integration in post-communist Europe is widely acknowledged, significant questions remain open about the future of peaceful and democratic interethnic relations. The scope of this special issue is to provide a framework for scholars to discuss the specific ways in which conditions for minority inclusion have changed in Central and Eastern Europe. We conceive of political and social boundary-making as intertwined in significant ways, requiring scholars to bridge research agendas and pool resources in an effort to tackle the complexity of questions involving minority inclusion. We believe the journal Intersections provides an ideal venue for this approach, given its mission to open space for scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and create linkages among scholars in diverse regions.

Therefore both political attitudes and the level of engagement in politics have changed substantially. The global economic crisis has had a direct impact on young citizens: they are most likely to face unemployment, unstable career prospects, and thus feel alienated and disenfranchised from society. Although politicians and academics have called attention to the fact that young people are increasingly disengaged from conventional politics, young peoples’ perspectives and generational differences are rarely taken into account simultaneously. Call for Papers: Global migration crisis and Europe: Whose crisis is it?

The global refugee crisis in 2015 has become a central theme of public life in Europe, and it is most likely that it will remain at the top of the agenda in 2016 as well. This is usually explained by its unprecedented volume and the circumstances of how non-EU citizens have crossed EU borders. Refugee reception systems have not been able to handle the large number of asylum-seekers and their failure questions existing legal and policy frameworks within the EU, one of the wealthiest political entities in the world. How unique this situation is in global or historical perspectives is a matter of debate. Different waves of massive migration have been part and parcel of European history. Looking at migration in a global context we must acknowledge the existence of substantially larger migrant populations fleeing violent conflict zones. Migration that is presented as a crisis and as the most important problem of the EU may be attributed to causes that are not necessarily related to migration. The systematic study of social movements in Central and Eastern Europe began with studying the transition of Communist regimes and the role of grass roots mobilizations in that process. Over the years large parts of civil society became professionalized and social movements were often limited to their subcultural enclaves. This development led to a complex relationship between political parties, contentious politics and society. Nevertheless, despite common beliefs concerning weak civil societies, the region witnessed numerous protest campaigns, waves of mobilization accompanying the Global Justice Movement, and in recent years the growth of far-right movements.
